Health information technology, or health IT, generally refers to the exchange of health data – everything from an individual's health record, which includes images, lab results, prescriptions and medical history, to aggregated health statistics – among medical facilities, researchers and doctors' offices. Most experts view health IT as a way to improve health outcomes and reduce spending by billions of dollars a year.
