Cloud computing is the process of outsourcing IT services, such as data storage and e-mail, to a shared platform accessed remotely through the Internet. This arrangement has been praised for saving money and energy, as a vendor maintains the infrastructure and applications that run in the cloud environment instead of the agency. The use of cloud computing in the federal government is on the rise. The General Services Administration successfully transferred the federal Web portal USA.gov to the cloud and subsequently released a federal cloud computing storefront, apps.gov, aimed at reducing IT costs for agencies.
