Green information technology is frequently used to describe environmentally sound computing practices. This includes everything from energy-efficient data centers to recycling old or unusable electronics. Making data centers more environmentally friendly has been of considerable importance, as federal data centers account for 1.5 percent of total energy consumption in the United States. The Obama administration is pushing green government practices like distributing memos electronically instead of by paper and teleworking when feasible. Some agencies are embracing these changes more readily than others.
